Teen Mom

Teenage pregnancy is overly publicized in a negative way because it is being romanticized. Teenagers are lying about whether they are pregnant because they see celebrities like Jamie Spears who became pregnant at the age of 16 and think it is cool. The girls that are on the reality shows 16& Pregnant and Teen Mom are plastered on the cover of every magazine as seen below discussing their private lives rather than promoting awareness. Honestly, I dont find it necessary to talk about these teenagers as if they are celebrities. They were chosen to help others teenagers and give them insight on how their lives were to be young parents, an instant celebrity was not the motive. Teenagers should promote pregnancy awareness. Teenagers should be educating other teenagers on prevention, birth control, and the hardships that come with motherhood. You would think that with all of these shows that advertise teenage motherhood, that the rates of pregnancy would be on the rise. Instead, studies have shown that teenage pregnancy rates are lowering. Between 1988 and 2006, the U.S. pregnancy rate for teens aged 15-19 decreased from 111 pregnancies per 1,000 teen girls to 72 pregnancies per 1,000 teen girls in 2006. Latinas have the highest pregnancy rate than any other ethnic group or minority. 52% of Latinas will get pregnant at least once before the age of 20. This shows that people are becoming smarter and aware of the risks of sex.
